The site of the current Cruso Community Center was originally a school built since 1890. The original school was replaced in 1927 and open to students October 12th, 1928, and used until 1966 when schools were consolidated throughout the county.
Philanthropist A.L. Freedlander purchased the building for $8,000 and gave it back to the community so it could be used as a community center.
The former school has been converted into a multi-purpose gathering center where community residents and visitors can gather for events, enjoy a unique shopping experience or browse through the spacious library.
Aside from the thrift store, the center maintains a food pantry for those in the area who need a helping hand, and a library stocked with over 6,000 books ready for check out. It offers classes in various crafts, and skills, CPR classes, and other classes of interest. The center is the home for various community events such as an annual Strawberry fest, 4th of July cookout, annual meeting, fall festival, Halloween party, and monthly community flea markets.
Volunteers to work the thrift shop, or help with events should email us at crusocommunitycenter@gmail.com or call 828-400-1690 to sign up.
Local families and caretakers have returned here year after year using the building as a gathering place for their families during reunions, celebrations, and when challenging times inevitably arise.
We welcome you to join us and be a part of our community.
The Cruso Community Center is available for use by request for birthdays, anniversaries, family reunions, and other events. Rental fees are donation based. Anyone using the building is required to clean up after themselves and take out the trash. For reservations call Amber Capps at 828-400-1690.
